About ARAMIDS
Origins
Soonmotowear.com: Motorcycle jackets and shirts shop – kevlar shirt shop
Kevlar® refers to a polymer used to spin synthetic fibres displaying considerable mechanical strength. Kevlar® is a subtype of a group of fibres called aramids. Kevlar® was invented in 1965 in the laboratories of the American company DuPont™ and patented in 1974. Kevlar® is a registered trademark of DuPont™. Aramid fibres are also produced by the Japanese company Teijin which uses the brand name Twaron. Since it is the original Kevlar® of DuPont company which is used to produce our motorcycle clothing, we shall avail ourselves of this brand name.
Characteristics
Kevlar® can be characterized by a considerable tensile strength. On an equal weight basis Kevlar® is five times stronger than steel. It displays equally high thermal strength and dimensional stability as well as a slight elongation upon rupture. It is not subject to corrosion, and it is resistant to most chemicals. KEVLAR® fibres are also non-combustible, non-conducting and resistant to wear and tear. KEVLAR® melts at a temperature exceeding 400°C and does not dissolve in organic solvents.
Use
Kevlar® is widely used in armaments industry for the production of bulletproof vests, protective helmets and ropes as well as fire-proof clothing and, naturally, in the motor vehicle industry in the production of all sorts of motorcycle clothing.
Kevlar® fibres may be used in the production of fabrics whose application in the manufacture of motorcycle clothing is already known to you. This application is of invaluable use. However, those who have come across this type of clothing, are aware that, indeed, it is the colour – invariably bright yellow – that constitutes a common element of motorcycle clothing made of Kevlar®. Essentially, what differs are the strands of fibre in a given fabric, the weight of Kevlar®, its softness, its tensile resistance and moisture absorption. What matters though, is the fact that all these fabrics may be of varying wear resistance. And it is the latter feature which the motorcyclists value the most in Kevlar®.
Our Fabrics
We offer best looking and the most stylish motorcycle Kevlar ® shirts and jackets ever.
In principle, Kevlar® may be sewn directly onto the fabric that a given type of clothing is made of. However, it may be also an additional fabric used as a lining or sewn between the outer fabric and the lining fabric. In our view, it is the latter mode of Kevlar’s® application in motorcycle clothing that ensures the highest level of safety for motorcyclists. This is due to the fact that, in this case, we have the possibility to apply an additional outer layer which constitutes an additional safeguard against abrasion (e.g. thick Jeans). As a result, such motorcycle clothing has better thermal properties. When we began to carry out works over our project, we also faced the choice what kind of fabric should be used to guarantee not only motorcyclist’s comfort but also the best possible protection during the slide. We also aimed at making Kevlar®, sewn into our motorcycle clothing, shrink-resistant.
Unfortunately, we have already encountered a similar problem in another type of clothing which we came across: the fabric tended to shrink by up to 10 per cent and more during the wash. In our view, motorcycle clothing should be durable and safe to the extent possible. We did not use protectors since, to our mind, their use in a loose type of shirt makes very little sense. The protectors keep sliding and wearing them is uncomfortable (and not always reasonable).
In any case, what we focused on was the quality of Kevlar® used. There were several dozen types of Kevlar® to choose from. The fabrics differed in terms of weight, thickness, strand, wear resistance and varying resistance to shrinkage. We succeeded in selecting such Kevlar® that would meet the motorcyclist’s vital expectations. At the same time, the use of thick outer fabric additionally intensified the wear resistance of our motorcycle clothing.
Our motorcycle Kevlar® shirts are made with the use of premium materials. Kevlar® is sewn between the two fabrics of a motorcycle shirt. Since the direct contact with the Kevlar® we use is not recommended, we applied a lining fabric – which is both breathable and tensile – for the motorcyclist’s better comfort. Kevlar® is sewn into almost the whole surface of our motorcycle shirts, except for the cuff and the collar. In order to avoid the unbuttoning of the shirt during the accident, we applied an additional covered inner zip beneath the snap fasteners, with a two-way opening. Each Kevlar® motorcycle shirt contains an extended back in order to better protect the back and the kidneys, which may be of particular significance when one rides in a sporty position or on a good cafe racer.
At the same time, we did our best to find a reasonable compromise between the comfort of Kevlar® motorcycle clothing and safety. Both on- and off-the track.
